Heating Systems Myths, Debunked
After 30 years of furnace and heat pump installs across Hendricks County, here are the myths we hear most often - and the honest contractor's answer.

Myth #1: Closing vents in unused rooms saves money.
False. Closing vents raises static pressure in the duct system, makes the blower work harder, and can crack heat exchangers over time. Modern furnaces are sized for the whole-home airflow design - choking it off doesn't save fuel, it shortens equipment life.
Myth #2: A bigger furnace heats better.
False. Oversized furnaces short-cycle - they fire up, slam the house with heat, hit the thermostat, shut off, and repeat. That wears out ignitors and blower motors, leaves the house with hot/cold spots, and wastes fuel. We size every install with an ACCA Manual J load calculation.
Myth #3: Heat pumps don't work in Indiana winters.
False - but with an asterisk. Modern cold-climate inverter heat pumps hold full capacity down to about 5°F. Below that, you want a gas furnace as backup. That's why we recommend hybrid (dual-fuel) systems for central Indiana homes.
Myth #4: Cranking the thermostat heats the house faster.
False. Furnaces and heat pumps put out heat at one fixed rate. Setting the thermostat to 80°F doesn't get you to 68°F any faster - it just means the system overshoots and shuts off late.
Myth #5: Furnace filters only matter for air quality.
False. A clogged filter chokes airflow, overheats the heat exchanger, and trips the high-limit switch. Most "broken furnace" calls we get in January are filters that haven't been changed since fall. Replace every 60–90 days for 1" filters.
Myth #6: Annual maintenance is a sales gimmick.
False. Burner cleaning, flue inspection, draft measurement, and CO testing catch issues before they become 2am no-heat emergencies. We find a cracked heat exchanger or a sketchy flue on roughly 1 in 30 tune-ups - that's a carbon monoxide hazard, not a sales pitch.
Myth #7: All HVAC contractors are basically the same.
False. Ask three contractors for a furnace replacement quote and you'll get three different system sizes, three different warranties, and three different price ranges. We back our installs with 12 years on parts AND labor - roughly double the industry norm. See our furnace installation page.
